I called up Jinesh yesterday the moment i saw this news about girl committing suicide because she did not have a TV or smartphone at home to attend the online classes.

I requested him to find out about the 20 families (and other families in that tribal belt area - Maniyarankudi - Idukki) that we helped during flood relief to start with. Jinesh swung in to action immediately and he came back with this list by yesterday evening and he said there are many more children in the similar situation.

I have identified 4 cases.
1. Sajan's family - 3 daughters studying, lives in the laksham colony.
2. Daughter of Thomas Padijarekkara, her husband is paralysed.. have one school going child.
3 Jomon's family - (mason) 2 school going daughters, live with aged parents.
4 Ratheesh's family ( mason ) 3 scool going children, one kid is having kidney disease
Another case is Maria Das, we helped them last year. Their son is studying in KV...
There
are couple of similar cases... depending upon the budget, we may expand
the list (if we can identify a lower cost tab/phone, we may be able to
help more)

Jinesh has already started collecting the details of the children (names, age, class, school etc) along with the id proofs, family income details etc. We have already started looking at those to shortlist eligible families. I'm planning to call the shortlisted families today to find out more details.
What we discussed is we should give them a smart phone or a Tab (that has sim provision as none of those families have access to wi-fi). Tab may be better. 7 or 8 inch tab will come in the price range of 8-10k (INR).
My suggestion is to allocate 50K from our internal fund and raise another 50k (at least) from external sources. Please let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and also let me know if you have any suggestion on the device that we can buy for them and if you have any source where we can get it in a discounted price. By the way, currently there's a huge shortage of these devices in Kerala.
Sad news to hear for Devika. We can help the eligible candidates .I'm fine. I think TV is needed -right.
ReplyDeleteThey have these classes online also where they can watch those at their convenience, and the problem with TV is they will end up missing most of the classes coz of the power issues in their area.

ReplyDeletePlease find below all the details of the shortlisted families. Sreeju has found a good reliable source from where we are planning to buy 5 second hand laptops today. Descent configuration and we are getting it for 7-8K (including OS). Sreeju will get it to Cochin this weekend from Bangalore. We are planning to give one laptop per family, prioritizing based on the families where there are kids studying in higher classes. Jinesh is looking for local sponsors in his area for providing wi-fi to the families identified. For rest of the families, we are planning to buy Tabs and looking at the options.
